The Byodo-in Temple situated at Valley of the Temples Memorial Park was established on June 7, 1968 to commemorate the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii. The Byodo-in is a replica of the 950 year-old Buddhist temple in Japan, which was converted from a villa in the year 1053. The original is located in Uji, in the Kyoto area. The temple, garden and related structures were built by Valley of the Temples Corporation firm, in their belief that the culture and religions of our ancestors should be preserved. The garden surrounding the temple, designed by Kyoto landscape architect, Kiichi Teoman-Sano, is believed to be the largest ever built outside of Japan. The garden is arranged to create a serene and peaceful landscape with the majestic Ko'olau Mountains as the backdrop. Thus the entire scene enhances the feeling that a phoenix (bird of paradise) has just landed from the top of Mt. Sumeru (Buddhist paradise mountain) on the "Land of the Western Paradise," leading us into eternal quintessence and peace. Hide
