Kamehameha the Great unified Hawaii and became its first state leader, then monarch. His date of birth is uncertain, but is somewhere between 1748 and 1761. Kamehameha was a great warrior, but is equally known for his peaceful rule. He abolished the practice of human sacrifice before his death and, perhaps most famously, instituted the Law of the Splintered Paddle, which protected non-combatants in time of war. Kamehameha died on May 8th, 1819. His burial place was kept secret according to custom. June 11th is the official holiday in honor of Kamehameha.
